A Day in the Life

Just like you, residents at Gabriel Homes follow daily routines like going to work and cooking dinner. The residents are also active in their communities.

Routines at Gabriel Homes are as diverse as the residents themselves. Not all schedules follow the same rhythms, but there is a shared sense of community when the residents are home together. Each resident has different routines that best meet their needs and preferences.

The schedule below️ reflects what a day may look like for a resident during the work week:

Rise and Shine

6:30 a.m.: Sound the Alarms
The early-morning chime marks the start of a new day for Gabriel Homes. Everyone is up and about for the day ahead.

6:40 a.m.: Breakfast and Medications
Following the alarm, residents come together for nutritious, healthy breakfasts. Those who need their medications will take them during their meals.

7:00 a.m.: – The Morning Routine
As the clock ticks 7, the morning routine unfolds. Everyone heads back to their private spaces and does their series of teeth brushing, showering, and dressing for the day.

Journey of the Job

8:00 a.m. – Early Commute
Residents start their daily journeys to work. Some work full-time or part-time, and others attend vocational trainings or support programs during the week. Some rely on taking taxis, buses, or the Metro to make it on time.

8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. – Work Hours
Many of the residents work in the Greater Reston community and are employed by nationally known companies including Walmart, Safeway, Giant, Potbelly, and the United States Geological Survey. Some are proud to tell you they’ve been at their job for over 20 years!

4:30 to 6:00 p.m. – The Road Home
Returning home, residents are welcomed back to their home, comforted and supported by their roommates. Everyone rotates responsibilities and splits chores for the evening, including keeping their private and public areas clean.

Rest and Relaxation

6:30 p.m. – Dinner Time
Everyone plays a role in preparing dinners for the evening. Meals are typically eaten family style in the dining rooms. Everyone is expected to be together, including direct support professionals.

7:30 p.m. – Clean the Kitchen and Pack for Tomorrow
Residents show their commitment to keeping their spaces in top shape by tidying the kitchen after eating. Many prepare their leftovers for lunch the next day.

8:30 p.m. – Downtime
With the day winding down, residents dive into their favorite ways to wrap up their days. Some join on the couch and watch TV, while others catch up with family and friends on their own.

10:00 p.m. – Bedtime Routine
The day gracefully wraps up at 10 so everyone gets a full night’s sleep for another bright day ahead. From changing into their PJs of choice to brushing their teeth and taking out their contacts, tomorrow sets the stage for another successful day for the residents of Gabriel Homes.

You may have noticed that your schedule looks very similar to the residents. At Gabriel Homes, our residents’ routines help them connect with the Reston and Herndon communities. They are active members with their peers at work, events, and social groups. Through their involvement, they make their communities more lively and diverse.

Residents are always looking to pick up new skills during their downtime. Do you have a talent you would like to share with the residents? Learn about how you can get involved and teach our residents fun, new skills.
